"The food was great, the weather was great, and the entertainment was outstanding...This was the best cruise I have ever been on!

If I can apply only 1/10th of what I digested over that weekend, then I can make a difference in the wilderness."

-Dylan O.

Enroll in a closed class.
Reduce your course fee.

Keep WFAC costs down by volunteering.

WFAC needs help with various tasks.

WFAC's low fees (less than half of comparable value at a commercial course) depend on our students volunteering to help set up and run the course.

You may be able to enroll in a course for which enrollment has closed or lower your course fee by helping the WFAC with one of these tasks:

Transport course gear.

Transport course gear from Fullerton to Harwood Lodge (on Mt. Baldy) and help set it up.

This requires a strong back and a vehicle with a minimum cargo area of greater than 100 cubic feet (height x weight x length), such as a van or large SUV or large pickup with a camper shell.

In Fullerton, load the gear into your vehicle between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. the Thursday before the course.

Drive gear directly to Harwood Lodge, unload it, and carry it into the lodge.

Some items are bulky but none weighs more than about 30 lbs. WFAC will arrange for a person at Harwood Thursday evening to help you carry the large items. If you want assistance unloading in Fullerton on Sunday evening, you will need to recruit a carpool buddy to help you.

If you are on the waitlist for a course, doing this for the previous course or the course for which you are enrolled will get you and a qualified significant other confirmed enrollment in the same course for which you were waitlisted.

Help in the kitchen.

Help make the WFAC a memorable experience for participants (and for yourself!) by cooking and doing other kitchen tasks.

Kitchen staff enjoy this so much that they return--just for fun. (Join them and find out why!)

Find out why kitchen staff 'regulars'
return time-after-time!

If you are registered for a course, doing this for the previous course will cover your fee for as many days as you worked in the kitchen.

If you are on the waitlist for a course, doing this for the previous course will get you confirmed enrollment in the same course for which you were waitlisted and will cover your fee for as many of the days as you worked in the kitchen.

For example, you are waitlisted for the Spring 2012 course. You cook Friday and Saturday for the Fall 2011 course. You will be moved off the waitlist into confirmed enrollment for the Spring 2012 course and the WFAC will waive your fee for two days.

Teach WFAC staff video making and editing.

Teach the WFAC staff how to shoot videos with a basic video camera and edit them on the Mac--fee reduction to be negotiated.

Train staff in stage/wound makeup.

Train course staff in theatrical makeup or moulage (fake wounds)--fee reduction to be negotiated.

Fly standby.

The WFAC accepts one applicant per course on a "standby" enrollment basis. The fee is one half the regular course fee. The applicant:

  • Receives the regular course mailings, including the pretest and course notes (about four weeks before the course)
  • Agrees that if there is a cancellation between two weeks and one week before the course, the applicant will accept the opening

If the applicant declines the opening, the applicant forfeits his fee and "goes to the back of the line," to start over for enrollment in future courses.

If there is no opening for the applicant between two weeks and one week before the course, the applicant "rolls over" into a regular confirmed enrollment in the subsequent course at one half the course fee.

If you want to be considered for a reduced enrollment fee in exchange for one of the above, email Steve at:

The need for help with a particular course may be filled by others ahead of you, so the need for your help is a possibility, rather than a guarantee, of fee reduction for a specific course date.

Do you have a skill, other than those listed above, that you think would benefit the WFAC?

Please email Lead Instructor, Steve, above.

Special Thanks
from the WFAC Staff!
